The Dream Story

Nightmare before Christmas

Thursday, December 20, 2007

It all started with Mr. Cole looking at me when I would come to pick Kian up from school. I quickly estimated Mr. Cole’s age between 23-26, my usual range when it comes to men that are attracted to me (which I am sure says more about me than them). H (my employer) was against it at first, professing that, should Mr. Cole and I get together and I break his heart, he will take it out on Kian. And her usual politically incorrect comments were along the lines of: “What will your father say if you brought him a mixed race man?” But then she started coming home with:”You know...I was watching Mr.Cole during assembly for parents, he really has a beautiful face and he is great with kids and who knows, he might not be as young as he looks...” so there I had my blessing.
She also started saying to Sass: “Sassy, do you think Martina should marry Mr. Cole?” Sass agrees heartily. Kian was less convinced that this would be a match made in heaven and when I said: “ Hey, Kian, I figured out what to do...I will write him a Christmas card and say: Mr. Cole, I would like to go for a coffee with you sometimes, this is my number...Martina, Kian’s nanny...and then I will give it to you to give to him.”
Kian ponders this for a second or two and says:” That is a great idea, only you should give it to him yourself, that way you are sure he got it.”, thus spelling out to me that he wants no part in this.
Anyway, this has become a long standing joke in the household with Homa now urging me to ask him out for a coffee and take the boys with us to break the ice, although I can imagine Kian staring at us with disgust so not sure if that would work as she intended.
Anyway...to cut a long story short, last day of school yesterday, I am waiting for Kian outside the school with Sass and Mr. Cole approaches Sassy and starts talking to him. Sass looks at me, looks at Mr. Cole and I see he has an Eureka moment and I know just what it is and I start running towards them, albeit too late...I hear Sass say: “Hey Mr. Cole...do you know Martina (and here he points towards me)? She loooves you.” He starts to say that I want to marry him too but I drag him by the hood.
Mr. Cole has bent down to hear what Sass had to say and now is staring at the kid and then at me, and then at the kid again all confused. I pull Sass away and mutter something to distract Mr. Cole away from his calculations of the situation that just occured and I hope ground will swallow me up.
Kian’s reaction to the events: “You must be like....sooo embarassed.”
The truth is, I was for about 3 minutes but it provided a great laugh for the whole family for the rest of the day. Saeed, ill in bed with chest infection almost choked how much he laughed at that...the thing is, when Homa was joking that I will marry Mr. Cole on a daily basis, I said to her...listen, don’t do it in front of Sass, I can just see him going up to Mr. Cole and spilling the beans on this.
5 year old + secret = disaster.
